Co-author of several books on Russia’s security services, including The New Nobility: The Restoration of Russia’s Security State and The Red Web: The Kremlin’s Wars on the Internet. Former reporter for Novaya Gazeta, Moscow News, and Izvestia, reporting on conflicts in Chechnya, Lebanon, and the Middle East. Contributor to Foreign Policy and Foreign Affairs, analyzing Russian cyber and surveillance strategies.
